A treasure trove of prehistoric significance and natural beauty, sprawled between the Bintang and Titiwangsa mountain ranges in northern Perak. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012, this serene valley offers a unique glimpse into human history, dating back nearly two million years.
At the heart of Lenggong's archaeological allure is the Perak Man, Southeast Asia's most complete prehistoric human skeleton, estimated to be around 11,000 years old. Discovered in Gua Gunung Runtuh, the Perak Man's burial site provides invaluable insights into early human rituals and societal structures.
The valley is dotted with significant archaeological sites. Bukit Bunuh stands out as one of the oldest known sites of human habitation outside Africa, with stone tools embedded in suevite rock formed by a meteorite impact approximately 1.83 million years ago. Nearby, the Kota Tampan site reveals a Paleolithic tool workshop dating back about 74,000 years, offering a window into early technological development.
Nature enthusiasts will find solace in the valley's lush landscapes. The Lata Kekabu Eco Forest Park, located just 10 kilometers from Lenggong town, features a pristine waterfall surrounded by verdant rainforest, ideal for picnics and leisurely hikes.
For those interested in cultural heritage, the Masjid Raja in Kampung Chepor, built in 1541, stands as Malaysia's second-oldest mosque. Constructed with traditional techniques and materials, it reflects the architectural ingenuity of the era.
Visitors can deepen their understanding of the valley's rich history at the Lenggong Archaeological Museum in Kota Tampan. The museum houses a collection of artifacts, including stone tools and replicas of significant findings, providing context to the valley's archaeological sites.
Whether you're a history buff, nature lover or cultural enthusiast, the Lenggong Valley offers a multifaceted experience that connects you to the roots of human civilization amidst Malaysia's captivating landscapes.
