Malaysia's commitment to sustainable environmental stewardship. Spanning over 40,000 hectares, it is the largest mangrove forest reserve in the country and is globally recognized as one of the best-managed mangrove ecosystems.

Established as a Permanent Forest Reserve in 1906, Matang has been under systematic management since 1908, employing a 30-year rotational cycle that balances timber production with conservation. Approximately 80% of the reserve is designated for sustainable timber and charcoal production, while the remaining 20% is preserved for conservation, supporting a rich biodiversity.

Visitors to the Eco Park can explore a network of wooden boardwalks that meander through the lush mangrove forest, offering an intimate glimpse into this unique ecosystem. The park is a haven for birdwatchers, especially during the migratory season from August to April, when over 200,000 migratory birds representing around 50 species make a stopover here.

Beyond birdwatching, the park offers educational opportunities through its Eco-Education Center, where visitors can learn about the ecological importance of mangroves and the sustainable practices employed in the reserve. Guided boat tours provide an immersive experience, allowing guests to observe the diverse flora and fauna, including mudskippers, crabs and monitor lizards, in their natural habitat.

The Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve Eco Park is not only a sanctuary for wildlife but also plays a crucial role in coastal protection and carbon sequestration, highlighting the multifaceted value of mangrove ecosystems. Its successful integration of conservation and sustainable use serves as a model for mangrove management worldwide.

For those seeking a serene escape into nature, coupled with educational enrichment, the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve Eco Park offers an unparalleled experience that underscores the harmony between human activity and environmental preservation.
