Stands as a testament to nature's enduring majesty. Spanning 117,500 hectares, this ancient rainforest is believed to be over 130 million years old, predating even the Amazon and Congo forests. As part of the expansive Belum-Temengor Forest Complex, it offers a sanctuary for a myriad of flora and fauna, many of which are rare or endangered.
The park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, boasting sightings of the elusive Malayan tiger, Asian elephant and the white-handed gibbon. Birdwatchers will be enthralled by the presence of all 10 hornbill species found in Malaysia, including the majestic rhinoceros hornbill. The forest floor is adorned with over 3,000 species of flowering plants, among them the rare Rafflesia azlanii, one of the world's largest flowers.
Adventure seekers can embark on jungle treks leading to the mesmerizing Sungai Kooi Waterfall, where waters cascade from a height of approximately 50 meters, creating a misty veil. Boat cruises on Lake Temenggor, Malaysia's second-largest man-made lake, offer serene vistas and opportunities to visit the indigenous Orang Asli villages, providing a glimpse into their rich cultural heritage.
Accommodations range from eco-resorts nestled along the lake's shores to houseboats that drift gently on its calm waters, ensuring visitors are immersed in the park's tranquil ambiance. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to September, when the weather is most conducive to exploration.
Royal Belum State Park is not just a destination; it's an experience that reconnects you with nature's untouched beauty. Whether you're an avid naturalist, a cultural enthusiast or someone seeking solace away from urban hustle, this ancient rainforest promises memories that will last a lifetime.
