Formerly known as the Ipoh City Council (MBI) Swimming Complex, this facility underwent a significant RM43 million upgrade completed in February 2018. The renovation introduced state-of-the-art amenities, including an Olympic-sized pool with 10 lanes, capable of hosting world-class competitions and accommodating up to 3,000 spectators. Additionally, the open section features a pool and a diving tower constructed to meet International Amateur Swimming Federation (FINA) standards.
The centre was officially inaugurated by the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, after whom it is named. It served as the venue for swimming and diving events during the 2018 Perak Malaysia Games (SUKMA), highlighting its capacity to host major sporting events.
Beyond professional competitions, the Tuanku Zara Aquatic Centre is open to the public, offering facilities for swimmers of all ages and skill levels. Admission fees are affordable, with rates for children aged 1–12 years at RM2 on weekdays and RM3 on weekends, adults at RM3 on weekdays and RM4 on weekends and free entry for individuals with disabilities. The centre operates multiple sessions from Tuesday to Sunday, ensuring ample opportunities for visitors to enjoy the facilities.
