Established in 1929, it holds the distinction of being the first airfield in both Perak and Peninsular Malaysia, marking a significant milestone in the nation's early aviation history.
Beyond its architectural significance, Tekah Airfield has been a silent witness to pivotal moments in history. Notably, on August 12, 1945, it served as the meeting ground for Indonesian leaders Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta with local nationalists Dr. Burhanuddin al-Helmi and Ibrahim Yaacob, discussing the potential unification of Malaya and Indonesia. Additionally, in 1937, aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart made a refueling stop here during her historic round-the-world flight.
Today, Tekah Airfield continues to serve the aviation community, primarily as a training ground for military and police paratroopers. Its expansive open space also attracts drone pilots, paramotor enthusiasts and skydivers, making it a vibrant spot for aerial sports. On weekends, the area comes alive with families flying traditional Malay kites, known as "wau," and enjoying the serene atmosphere.
Recognizing its historical and cultural value, efforts are underway to preserve Tekah Airfield as a heritage site. Local authorities are in the process of gazetting the airfield to ensure its legacy is maintained for future generations. The annual Taiping Air Festival, held here in December, showcases hot air balloons, light aircraft, paramotors and skydiving displays, drawing visitors from around the world.
Whether you're an aviation enthusiast, a history buff or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Tekah Airfield offers a unique experience. Its blend of historical significance, natural beauty and recreational activities makes it a must-visit destination in Taiping. Don't miss the opportunity to witness the breathtaking sunset views and immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Malaysia's aviation history.
