Officially inaugurated on September 15, 1978, by Sultan Idris Iskandar Shah II, the mosque was constructed to address the growing need for a larger place of worship in the city. Its strategic location near key landmarks such as the Ipoh Railway Station, the Ipoh District Police Headquarters, the Syariah Court and the Ipoh High Court underscores its significance in the urban tapestry of Ipoh.
Architecturally, the mosque is a marvel of modernist design infused with Islamic motifs. Designed by ATSA Architects, the double-storey structure is distinguished by its 66 oval-pointed domes, including a prominent central dome, all resting on exposed cross drum beams and crowned with slender pinnacles. The facade features molded concrete panels with Islamic arabesque patterns, creating a rhythmic and ornamental finish that captures the eye.
Beyond its architectural splendor, the mosque serves as a vibrant center for community and spiritual activities. It houses a main prayer hall, a dedicated female prayer area, a conference room, administrative offices, a library and support facilities such as storerooms, ablution areas and washrooms. The mosque's serene environment and beautifully landscaped gardens offer visitors a peaceful retreat for reflection and contemplation.
Visitors are encouraged to dress modestly in respect of the mosque's cultural and religious significance. Whether you're an architecture enthusiast, a history buff or someone seeking tranquility, the Sultan Idris Shah II Mosque offers a unique and enriching experience that reflects the spiritual and cultural essence of Perak.
