The temple's history dates back to 1890 when a monk from China discovered the cave and chose it as his abode for meditation. He remained there for 20 years until his passing. In the 1950s, the temple's current facade was constructed, preserving its spiritual significance while enhancing its architectural grandeur.
Visitors to Sam Poh Tong are greeted by a beautifully landscaped garden, which was awarded the Best Landscaped Garden in Malaysia in 1993. This tranquil setting features a large fish pond adorned with artificial rock formations, Japanese stone lanterns and pagodas, creating a picturesque environment for reflection and relaxation.
Inside the temple, a series of 246 steps lead to an open cave, offering panoramic views of Ipoh and its surroundings. The cave houses numerous Buddha statues interspersed among stalactites and stalagmites, showcasing the harmonious integration of natural formations and human craftsmanship. A unique feature of the temple is its turtle pond, where visitors can feed or release turtles as a symbolic act of balancing one's karma.
