Step into the heart of Gopeng, Perak and discover the Gopeng Museum—a captivating portal into Malaysia's rich tin mining heritage. Established in 2009, this museum is housed in a restored 19th-century shophouse that once served the renowned Eu Yan Sang company. Today, it stands as a testament to the town's vibrant past, offering visitors an immersive experience into the lives of early settlers and miners.
Open weekends from 9am to 3pm. Admission to Muzium Gopeng (Gopeng Museum) is free. The museum relies on donations from visitors to help with its upkeep and operation.
Inside the museum, you'll find an extensive collection of over 300 artifacts, including vintage household items, traditional tin mining equipment and historical photographs. Each exhibit narrates a story of Gopeng's evolution from a bustling tin mining hub to a serene heritage town. The museum's dedication to preserving these relics provides a tangible connection to the bygone era of British Malaya.
A short stroll from the museum leads you to the Gopeng Heritage House, an annex that complements the main exhibits. This heritage house showcases a meticulously recreated early 20th-century home, complete with antique furniture, vintage radios and period-specific décor. Visitors can explore rooms that reflect the lifestyle of a prosperous tin mine owner, offering a unique glimpse into the domestic life of that period.
Both the Gopeng Museum and Heritage House are community-driven initiatives, maintained by passionate locals committed to preserving their town's history. Admission is free, encouraging everyone to delve into Gopeng's cultural tapestry. The museum operates from Friday to Tuesday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, while the Heritage House welcomes visitors on weekends from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
