Established in 1957, the museum was inaugurated with the laying of its foundation stone by Raja Idris Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Shah, the then Raja Muda of Perak.

As part of the Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia, the museum serves as a pivotal center for geological education and research. Its exhibits are thoughtfully organized into seven distinct zones, each offering insights into various aspects of geology.

Visitors can marvel at an extensive collection of over 600 mineral specimens, including precious and semi-precious gemstones, as well as fossils that chronicle the Earth's history.

A highlight of the museum is its dedicated section on tin mining, showcasing artifacts and dioramas that depict the evolution of mining techniques in the Kinta Valley, once a significant tin mining region in Malaysia.

The museum also features interactive displays, such as a life-sized animatronic Tyrannosaurus Rex, engaging visitors of all ages.

Admission to the Geology Museum is free, making it an accessible destination for all. The museum operates from Monday to Thursday, 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM; and on Friday, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM. It remains closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
