The inception of the Batu Tenggek War Memorial dates back to 1917, during the tumultuous times of World War I. The Central Perak Planters Association initiated the idea to commemorate the local heroes, leading to the construction of this distinctive monument. Crafted from a massive granite boulder placed atop a concrete pedestal, it is the only war memorial of its kind in Malaysia. The memorial was officially unveiled on January 16, 1926, by Sir Theodore Fraser, the then General Officer Commanding Malaya.
Locally known as "Batu Tenggek" or "Sitting Boulder," the memorial is strategically located at the junction of Jalan Mahkamah and Jalan Maharaja Lela, near the Tabung Haji building. Its central location makes it easily accessible to visitors exploring the historical facets of Teluk Intan.
The monument bears the inscription of a poignant line from Laurence Binyon's poem, "For the Fallen"
"At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them".
This verse, along with the engraved years 1914–1918 and 1939–1945, solemnly commemorates the fallen heroes of both World Wars.
