A meticulously restored emblem of Malaysia’s tin-mining legacy and colonial-era grandeur. Commissioned in 1905 by Kapitan Chung Thye Phin, the last Kapitan China of Perak and Malaya, this three-story structure embodies the Neoclassical Victorian-Palladian architectural style, reflecting the opulence and ambition of a transformative period in Malaysian history.

Originally serving as the business headquarters and residence of Kapitan Chung, the building has been thoughtfully revitalized to house the “Made In Ipoh” gallery-museum. This cultural space offers immersive exhibits that delve into the rich tapestry of Ipoh’s past, highlighting the tin mining boom and the multicultural influences that shaped the city. Visitors can explore artifacts, vintage photographs and interactive displays that narrate the story of the region’s development.

The restoration of Arlene House was a labor of love, undertaken by conservationists Michael Chan and his wife Arlene. Their dedication to preserving the building’s historical integrity has transformed it into a living museum, allowing guests to experience the grandeur of early 20th-century architecture while gaining insights into the socio-economic narratives of the era.

Located at 18 Jalan Dato Maharajalela, Arlene House is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Its central location makes it easily accessible for those exploring Ipoh’s heritage trail. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or a casual traveler, a visit to Arlene House offers a unique opportunity to connect with Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage.
