Segari Turtle Conservation & Information Center
OPEN FOR PUBLIC. SOME AREAS MAY BE PROHIBITED.
CHARGES MAY APPLY FOR SOME AREAS OR ACTIVITIES.
Managed by the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, this sanctuary is dedicated to the preservation and rehabilitation of sea turtles, particularly the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), which has seen a decline in nesting due to human activities and habitat loss.
Since its inception, the center has been instrumental in the conservation efforts, releasing between 2,500 and 3,500 hatchlings annually into the sea. Visitors to the sanctuary can witness the various stages of a turtle's life cycle, from hatchlings to adults, in designated ponds. The facility also features educational displays that provide insights into the challenges faced by these marine creatures and the measures taken to protect them.
Pasir Panjang Beach, adjacent to the sanctuary, serves as a critical nesting ground for sea turtles. The beach's pristine condition is vital, as turtles are sensitive to disturbances and may avoid nesting in areas with excessive human activity or pollution. Efforts are ongoing to maintain the beach's natural state, ensuring it remains a safe haven for nesting turtles.
The sanctuary is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and admission is free, making it an accessible destination for families, students and nature enthusiasts. While there is no café on-site, basic amenities such as toilets and a prayer room are available. Visitors can also purchase turtle feed for a small fee, offering a unique opportunity to interact with the turtles under supervision.
A visit to the Turtle Conservation and Information Center in Segari not only offers an educational experience but also supports the ongoing efforts to protect and conserve Malaysia's marine biodiversity. It's a testament to the nation's commitment to environmental stewardship and a must-visit for those passionate about wildlife conservation.
