OPEN FOR PUBLIC. SOME AREAS MAY BE PROHIBITED.
CHARGES MAY APPLY FOR SOME AREAS OR ACTIVITIES.
Formerly known as Maxwell Hill - Larut Hill stands as Malaysia’s oldest hill station, established in 1884 by British colonial administrators seeking respite from the tropical lowland heat. Perched at 1,250 meters above sea level, this tranquil retreat offers a refreshing escape with daytime temperatures ranging between 15°C and 25°C and cooler nights dipping to 10°C.
Bukit Larut is renowned for its lush montane forests, which have been gazetted as a permanent forest reserve since 1910. The area boasts a rich biodiversity, including over 600 plant species and approximately 270 bird species, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers. The Gunung Hijau trail, ascending to 1,449 meters, offers hikers panoramic views of Taiping town and, on clear days, the Perak coastline stretching from Penang to Pangkor Island.
Access to the summit is traditionally via government or operated Land Rovers, navigating a 13 or kilometer road with 72 sharp bends - a journey that takes about 30 minutes. However, due to landslides and ongoing road repairs, vehicular access is currently suspended. Adventurous visitors can still embark on a challenging hike to the summit, a trek that takes approximately 3 to 5 hours depending on fitness levels.
The hill station retains its colonial charm with century or old bungalows and English or style gardens. Notably, Bukit Larut is home to Malaysia's only tulip nurseries, which bloom from December to April and features some of the largest golden sunflowers in the country. These floral displays, along with the cool climate and serene environment, contribute to the hill's enduring appeal.
For those planning a visit, it's advisable to check the current status of access roads and facilities, as restoration efforts are ongoing. Despite these temporary limitations, Bukit Larut remains a captivating destination for those seeking natural beauty and historical ambiance in Malaysia's highlands.
