Established in the early 1950s and originally named Coronation Park, it was later renamed to honor D.R. Seenivasagam, a prominent lawyer and politician who served as an Ipoh Member of Parliament from 1958 to 1964.
Spanning approximately 30 acres, the park is adorned with mature trees, some over 70 years old, providing ample shade and a serene environment for visitors . The park's facilities cater to a wide range of activities: from football fields and multipurpose areas for sports enthusiasts to well-maintained playgrounds for children. Cycling enthusiasts can enjoy dedicated tracks, complete with traffic signs and signals, offering a safe and educational experience for younger riders.
A highlight of the park is the Japanese Garden, established in 2019 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Ipoh-Fukuoka Sister Cities programme. This tranquil space features traditional landscaping elements, including a koi pond and stone arrangements, reflecting the aesthetics of its Japanese counterpart.
In recent years, the park has embraced urban farming initiatives, introducing greenhouses constructed from natural materials like bamboo. These spaces cultivate a variety of fruits and vegetables, such as cucumbers and pineapples, promoting sustainable practices and offering visitors a chance to engage with local agriculture.
Accessibility is a key feature, with the park open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Bicycle rentals are available at affordable rates and visitors can enjoy picnics under the shaded areas, making it an ideal spot for family outings. Additionally, the park's proximity to the Kinta Riverfront allows for extended leisure activities, including dining and scenic walks.
D.R. Seenivasagam Park continues to be a cherished green space in Ipoh, reflecting the city's commitment to preserving natural beauty while providing recreational opportunities for all.
